7 Essential Tips for Long-Term Excavator Storage

Proper storage is crucial to protect your excavator from damage when it's not in use for an extended period. Follow these seven key steps to ensure your machine starts up smoothly and remains in top condition when you need it again.

Tip 1: Perform a Comprehensive Inspection
Before storage, give your excavator a thorough inspection. Check for any existing faults, loose components, and the condition of the engine oil. Completely clean the machine to remove all dirt, mud, and debris, which can cause corrosion.

Tip 2: Use Season-Appropriate Fluids
For winter storage, switch to the correct diesel grade (e.g., -10 to -30) with a low pour point to prevent waxing. Drain any water and sediment from the fuel tank to avoid contamination and fuel system issues. Change the engine oil to a multi-grade oil suitable for the expected temperatures. Also, inspect the hydraulic system for leaks and address them promptly.

Tip 3: Protect the Hydraulic Cylinders
Fully retract all hydraulic cylinder rods to protect the polished piston rods from moisture and corrosion. If retraction is not possible, clean the rods and apply a generous layer of grease. Cover the exposed sections with a breathable cloth or protective sleeve for added defense against the elements.

Tip 4: Choose the Right Storage Location
An indoor, dry storage facility is ideal. If you must store the machine outdoors, select a flat, solid surface and place wooden blocks under the tracks to prevent settling. Crucially, avoid damp, salty, or excessively dusty environments, as they accelerate corrosion and component wear.

Tip 5: Remove Hazards and Secure the Cab
For outdoor storage, secure the machine by removing any valuables from the cab. Ensure there are no flammable materials left inside to prevent fire risks and theft.

Tip 6: Start and Operate the Machine Periodically
Start the engine at least once a month. Before starting, check and top off the engine oil and coolant levels. Once running, operate the hydraulic functions to circulate oil and lubricate internal components. Also, run the air conditioning system for 3-5 minutes to keep the seals lubricated and prevent failure.

Tip 7: Maintain the Battery
Batteries naturally discharge over time. The best practice is to disconnect the battery, remove it from the machine, and store it in a cool, dry place. Use a battery maintainer to charge it monthly. If the battery must remain installed, run the engine long enough during your monthly startup to fully recharge it and compensate for self-discharge.
